Alongside the President of the Republic of Latvia and the Speaker of the Saeima, Hungarian Ambassador György Urkuti also congratulated historian Marģers Vestermanis, researcher of the fate of Hungarian Jewish women deported to Latvia in 1944, on his 100th birthday on September 18. Mr. Vestermanis, himself a Holocaust survivor, has conducted irreplaceable and invaluable research over many decades in order to shed light on a little-known and horrific chapter of the Jewish Holocaust: the tragic fate of some 5,000 Hungarian Jewish women deported to Riga and other Latvian settlements, and the heroic deeds of brave Latvian patriots who rescued them and other Jews. We wish all the best to Mr. Vestermanis with a thankful heart for all his achievements!
